Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 游 游 (yóu, 2nd tone) surprises people. The Shuowen Jiezi glosses it 「游,旌旗之流也。从㫃,汓聲」 — 'the streamers of a banner', where 㫃 is a flag bending in wind and 汓 (to swim) supplies the sound. Duan Yucai explains the metaphor: 「旗之游如水之流,故得偁流也」 — a banner's tails move like water, so they are called a 'flow'. From flying pennants came drifting, then roaming, then swimming. 《詩·秦風·蒹葭》 uses the downstream sense, 「溯游從之,宛在水中央」; 《論語·述而》 makes it a mode of learning, 「志於道,據於德,依於仁,游於藝」; 《莊子·逍遙遊》 turns it into freedom itself. Wang Xizhi writes 「所以游目騁懷,足以極視聽之娛」 (《蘭亭集序》) — letting the eye roam and the heart gallop. Honest disclosure: script simplification merged 遊 (to travel, to roam) into 游 (to swim), so a modern reader sees 'swim' first — 游泳. Note also 游民 (vagrant) and 游手好閒 (idle). Fine standing alone, but expect 'swim' before 'wander'.
Cultural Story
游 is to move through water and through the world; Zhuangzi's happy fish 游泳 (swims) without care, and the Lunyu warned against 游 idle talk. The 游子 (wanderer far from home) grieved in a thousand poems, while gentlemen 游览 (toured) famous mountains. 旅游 (travel) and 游戏 (play) were the free man's pleasures.

Why this character belongs on skin
The Daoists gave us 游, the free roam — to swim through the world without being caught, the fish that belongs to no net and no pond. Zhuangzi wrote of wandering at ease, and he meant it as a discipline: do not let them pin you to a single shape. You know what it is to be read wrong by strangers, to be asked which box, to be told the story of your life should have a cleaner plot. 游 is the answer. It is the right to move, to change your name, your look, your city, your mind — to be a creature in motion and call that holy. We are the ones who learned early that home is a verb. Wear 游 and you carry the open water with you. No fence, no fixed address, no one's idea of enough. Just the long, free swim.
