Cultural Story

膏 means rich fat, and from it, ointments and pastes. The 左传 tells of Duke Jing's illness sinking into 膏肓 — the space above the heart and below the diaphragm — where even the greatest physician could not reach him: 病入膏肓, beyond cure. Confucian writers sneered at 膏粱, the rich meats and fine grain of spoiled nobles, whose soft diets softened their wills.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

You squeeze the last of the 牙膏, the toothpaste, flat and start a new tube. Grandfather presses a medicinal 膏药, a herbal plaster, onto his aching shoulder, while the pharmacy shelf holds row after row of 软膏, ointment in cream tubes. The builder recommends 石膏, gypsum plasterboard, for the ceiling, and jokes that the dust alone could set like 病入膏肓.

Why this character belongs on skin

Rendered fat, thick and luminous—the character draws grease rising from a vessel, and so 膏 means salve, balm, the unguent rubbed into wounds and crowns alike. Ancient kings were anointed; Christ was christened with oil; fighters still work a dark ointment into bruised ribs in a dim room that smells of camphor and consequence. 膏药, the healing plaster, is folk medicine's humble masterpiece—heat and herbs pressed against what hurts until the hurt loosens its grip. But the word also means richness itself: 膏粱, the rich meats and fine grain of the pampered; 膏火, lamp oil, the fuel of late-night study. So the same character that soothes a wound also feeds a lamp. There is something sensual in that—fat and fire, medicine and luxury sharing one glyph. A body deserves tending. A mind deserves light. This character holds both in a single stroke of amber. Ink it as a vow to anoint what is yours: the sore places, the late hours, the slow work of becoming smooth where the world once split you.
