Under the Tang Code (唐律疏议, promulgated in 653), every subject was expected to 遵守 the emperor's statutes, from tax to ceremony. Officials who 遵循 the prescribed rites kept their posts; those who did not faced the whip. The character 遵 — to follow and observe — named the daily obedience the state demanded of both clerk and farmer.
