Cultural Story
Cha carries a spread of senses, difference, an errand and shortcoming. The Shuo Wen gives it to send on a task, and histories note the cha (discrepancy) in tallies that betrayed a thief. Cha shi (errand, task) was the runner's duty, while cha (poor) later judged weak work. The character moves from sending a man out to measuring how far short he fell.

Read the story behind the character
You note the cha ju (gap, disparity) between your score and the top, and the cha bie (difference) in price is huge. A cha shi (errand, task) sends you to the post office, and the two reports show a cha yi (difference, discrepancy). The hotel was cha jin (poor, lousy), but the bus was cha bu duo (almost, nearly) on time. You text it's cha but fine.
Why this character belongs on skin
Perfection is a Western fever; the East understood the holiness of the almost. 差 means to differ, to fall short, to be a little wrong, and in its oldest bones it is the servant sent on an errand, the one who diverges from the straight line. The Confucian knew that a hair's breadth of error at the start becomes a thousand miles by the end; the warning is precise, not cruel. But there is mercy in the character too. To be 差 is to be human, to miss the mark the way an archer misses and thereby learns the wind. Do not ink this as an apology. Ink it as a flag. Let it testify that you have stopped pretending to be flawless and started being true. Place it where only a lover will read it. Let it say the gap between who you are and who you meant to be is not a failure but the very place where grace gets in.
