The Yongzheng Emperor ruled from 1722 to 1735 and, before his reign, lived at the mansion that became the 雍和宫, now a working lamasery in Beijing. His reign name 雍正 lent the syllable a tone of 雍容 dignity — measured, unhurried, sure of itself. Court painters showed him in 雍和 composure, the grace of a man who had survived the brutal politics of succession.
