Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

In the modern world 婆娑 mostly survives in 婆娑, said of leaves swaying in wind or an elder's 婆娑 tears. A garden essay names the 娑罗 tree in a temple yard, and a dancer's robe 婆娑 as she turns. The word lends a literary, slightly old-fashioned grace to movement and grief alike.

Why this character belongs on skin

Willows do it in wind; candle flames do it in draft; and in the old poems, dancers did it under lantern light — posuo, the unhurried sway of a body at ease in its own motion. Suo is that swaying, and it gave Buddhism the word for this entire world: saha, our realm of endurance, rendered in Chinese as suopo — the danceable, the swaying place. Think about that for a second. The tradition looked at human existence, with all its ache, and named it not a prison but a dance floor. The wise response to a world that will not hold still is not to grip it but to move with it, hip-loose, tree-like, letting the gust pass through your branches. You have been stiff for years, braced against every next thing. This character is the antidote — a small permission slip inked on skin: sway. The lanterns are lit. The wind has arrived on schedule. You might as well be beautiful about it, the way willows are, the way flames are, the way the world itself insists on being.
