2 · The Character: 所 Suǒ (3rd tone). The Shuowen: 「所，伐木声也。从斤户聲」 — the sound of felling timber, from 斤 (axe) with 户 (hù) for sound; this is the rare original sense. Far more common is its grammatical life as a particle marking place or object: 《诗经·卫风·硕鼠》 「爰得我所」 (there I find my place); 《论语·为政》 「视其所以，观其所由」 (observe what he does, watch whence he comes); and 所以 = 'the reason/cause'. Grading: 所 is a function word — it cannot stand alone with a fixed meaning; it needs a noun or clause. As 'place / that which', disclose that a solo 所 is a grammatical fragment, not a concept. Caution; pair it (所在, 所向) or use it inside a phrase.

所 began as a place, then became the grammatical pivot that turns a verb into a noun — the thing that is seen, the one who is loved.
