Cultural Story
疠 meant pestilence sweeping through crowded quarters, and by extension the scabbed, shunned sick. Zhuangzi provocatively ranked the leprous woman beside the beauty Xishi, collapsing the distance between horror and loveliness. Later dynasties answered with quarantine edicts and separate lodges where 疠疾 patients were isolated from their families and markets.

Read the story behind the character
Epidemiology inherited the fear: archives describe 疠疫 (plague, pestilence) sweeping through treaty ports, and 疫疠 (epidemic) still surfaces in solemn news prose. Museum guides at old quarantine gates use 疠疾 (pestilential disease) to remind visitors how brutally earlier centuries answered contagion they could not name.
Why this character belongs on skin
This character names pestilence — the fever that emptied villages, the sickness the ancients feared enough to write wards against on their doors. It is the darkest character in any batch, and precisely for that reason an honest one. Everyone who lives long enough survives plagues of some kind: the literal fevers, and then the subtler contagions — a bitterness caught from a room, a despair passed touch to touch, seasons when the air itself seemed sick. The old physicians worked by containment and by care; the saints went further, the ones like Damien of Molokai who walked into the leper colony and became its heart. That is the redemption this character offers: plague is real, and so is the person who moves toward it with a lamp. You have been quarantined by something and come out the other side carrying knowledge the healthy lack — an immunity of the spirit, a tenderness for the sick in any sense. This ink is a survivor's mark. Not a scar shown off; a scar consulted. Wear it where you can find it in the dark.
