Cultural Story
The Book of Songs vows yong shi fu xuan, I swear I shall never forget, a line of loyal memory carved into the airs of Wei. The character xuan here means to let slip from the mind, so the oath is precisely a refusal to do so. A later xuan yan names deceitful speech, but the older chord is fidelity held against time, the promise not to unlearn a debt.
Common words & phrases

Read the story behind the character
The phrase yong shi fu xuan is cut into the stone of the Nanjing memorial, where visitors are told never to forget the dead. A speaker closes with it at a commemoration, and a textbook glosses xuan yan as lying words. The character xuan thus lives at two poles, the vow to remember and the speech that betrays.
Why this character belongs on skin
The Book of Songs gives us its rarest vow: 永矢弗谖 — I swear never to forget. 谖 alone means to forget, or to beguile; the famous line is built on refusing it. This is the character of memory held against time, the promise that some person, some promise, some afternoon will not be sanded away by the years. Every love has tried to make this vow and most have failed; memory is a tide, and the Songs knew it, which is why the oath needed the word for forgetting inside it, like a stone inside a ring. There is tenderness in the failure too — Buddhism teaches that even grief releases its grip, and perhaps should. But you are not obligated to enlightenment today. Some things you are entitled to keep: a face, a debt of gratitude, the exact light in a room. Ink 谖 and you carry both meanings at once — the risk of forgetting and the sworn refusal. Choose what it guards. Then never let it go quiet.
