Cultural Story
闈 builds on 門 with 韋 and originally meant the side gates of a palace, the inner enclosures where women of the imperial household lived. By the Tang and later dynasties 闱 came to name the walled examination compound where candidates sat the civil service exams. 春闱 and 秋闱 were the spring and autumn sessions, and success there opened the road to office.

Read the story behind the character
Though the imperial exams are gone, 闱 survives in historical novels and period dramas about scholars sweating through the 春闱. 宫闱 now evokes palace intrigue among emperors and consorts, and 闱墨 refers to collections of winning exam essays studied by aspirants. The character keeps alive a world where a single gated compound decided a man's entire fortune and the fate of his family.
Why this character belongs on skin
闱 was the gate of the inner quarters—where the women of a great household lived, and by extension all that world of veiled rooms, whispers, letters passed through screens. Poetry made it an entire genre: boudoir verse, longing written by candlelight in rooms men could not enter. Later it named the examination halls too, the sealed compounds where scholars spent days in cells writing their lives into the civil service—so 闱 came to mean both the woman's world and the gate one passed through to become somebody. Both senses share one secret: behind the door is where the real thing happens. Desire, ambition, the true self unarmored. The character is a keyhole in ink. It suits the person who keeps rooms others never see, who knows that everything worth having is inner—inner life, inner circle, the inner door that opens only from inside. Small on the nape or the wrist, 闱 is a locked house. Whoever knocks had better knock gently, and mean it.
