Cultural Story
Dao shows a bird atop something, originally a place where birds alight and later an island surrounded by water. The Shuo Wen Jie Zi gives it as a mountain in the sea. The Shan Hai Jing lists fabulous dao of immortals, and Tang exiles dreamed of gu dao (lone islands) as both prison and refuge. Dao guo (island nations) recur in histories of maritime peoples trading across the waves.

Why this character belongs on skin
There is a kind of loneliness that is not sad. Stand at the rail of a ferry at dawn and watch a small green back rise from the water — a place that belongs to no shore, that answers to no map but its own. The character draws a bird above a mountain above the sea, as if the land itself were learning to fly. To live as an island is to be whole without being reachable, to keep your interior country private and intact. The Daoists called such solitude a virtue; the sea does not erode it, it only polishes the edges. Some of us are archipelagos — close to others, never continuous. To put dǎo on your skin is to announce that you are your own continent, sovereign and salt-stung, and that the water between you and the world is not a wall but a moat you chose. Let it sit near your heart, a small country that travels with you.
