Chinese kinship terms are famously exact, and 舅 is precisely the mother's brother — her blood, your mother's side. Ritual classics assign him a special seat at weddings and funerals; a 舅父 could speak in the family council where an outsider could not. With him came the 舅妈 or 舅母, his wife, who folded into the circle of kin by marriage.

Why this character belongs on skin

舅 is the mother's brother — a distinction the West flattened into uncle and China refused to. In the character's oldest life, recorded in the Rites, 舅 named a man across a web of reciprocal duty: a mother's brother was also, in another configuration, a father-in-law; the two families were bound by marriage into what the classics called 舅姑 relations, exchange making kin. Anthropologists would later call it the avunculate — the special tenderness and authority that runs down the maternal line, the man who is family without being law. Every culture knows him: the uncle who taught you to fish, who lied for you once, who stood at the door when fathers could not. The character carries that warmth in its formal bones. To wear 舅 is to honor kinship's side doors — the bonds not of command but of choice renewed each visit, the relative who arrives, laughs, and makes the whole family lighter.
