The orchid, 兰, stood among the four gentlemen of the brush — with bamboo, chrysanthemum, plum. Confucius compared the virtuous man adrift to a 兰 growing in empty valley, scenting the air no one passes. The Odes gathered 兰 for a bride's belt. Its smell, not its shape, carried the meaning.

Read the story behind the character

A window holds a pot of 兰花, watered every third day. The avenue is lined with 玉兰, magnolia, white in April. A 吊兰 spills from a hanging basket in the stairwell. The shop sells 米兰, aglaia, by the stem. None of it is symbolic now; the buyer just likes the smell near the door.

Why this character belongs on skin

The orchid grows in the deep shade where no one walks to praise it, and it blooms anyway — fragrant, unseen, indifferent to the applause of the world. 兰 was the gentleman's flower because the gentleman, too, cultivated virtue without an audience. Confucius compared the worthy man to this plant: alone in the gorge, still sending out scent.
