Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 夜 夜 (yè, 4th tone). Shuowen Jiezi defines night by rest, not by darkness: 夜,舍也。天下休舍也。从夕,亦省聲 — 'night is lodging; it is when all under heaven lodges and rests. From 夕 (evening), with 亦 abbreviated as the phonetic.' The classics use it as the measure of labour and of waiting: 《詩·衛風·氓》 '夙興夜寐,靡有朝矣'; 《詩·小雅·庭燎》 '夜如何其?夜未央' — how goes the night? The night is not yet half spent. Ritual gave it an altar: 《禮記·祭法》 '夜明,祭月也' — Yeming is the sacrifice to the moon. 夜 is a free morpheme (今夜, 夜色, 星夜). Honest disclosure: literary Chinese uses 夜臺 (yètái, 'the night terrace') as a euphemism for the grave, so the character does have one funerary corridor; and in modern usage 夜生活 / 夜店 pull it toward nightlife. Neither makes 夜 unsafe, but a buyer should know both before choosing it as 'my quiet hours.'
Cultural Story
夜 is night. The Tang poet 张继 wrote 『月落乌啼霜满天』 of a 夜 (night) on the river at anchor; 昼夜 (day and night) measured a siege or a vigil. 深夜 (late night) lamps lit the 科举 (exam) candidate cramming in his cell; 夜色 (night scene) cooled a scholar's garden. The character is the dark half that the candle fought against.
Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 'night' — the monk's silent working hours, written in the patient hand of Chan Master Yong, the seventh-generation Wang descendant who wrote eight hundred copies of the Thousand-Character Classic. Honest caveats: the 800-copy figure is a Tang anecdote possibly exaggerated; the Kyoto manuscript's authenticity is disputed; 夜臺 is a grave-euphemism.

Read the story behind the character
A 夜晚 (night) walk clears the head after a long day; 夜里 (at night) deliveries hum through the quiet streets. 深夜 (late night) streams a show in bed; 夜空 (night sky) apps map the stars for the amateur. 昼夜 (round the clock) clinics never close their doors. Gig apps turn 夜 into a shift someone else works — same dark, new economy.
Why this character belongs on skin
The last light goes and the crickets begin their long argument with the dark. 夜 is the night—not the enemy of day but its necessary other, the half of life the sun refuses to explain. The character once showed a person bowing under the falling dark; it meant the time when work stops and the inner things surface. The Daoist honors 夜 as the womb of thought, where the moon does the sun's rejected labor. To wear 夜 is to claim your nocturnal self—the one who thinks clearly at two a.m., who loves in shadows, who is honest only when no one is watching. It is the ink that suits the skin precisely because it belongs to the dark. Let it mark you where the moon would touch first. Some fear the night; this mark keeps it company. Wear the dark and you carry the part of yourself that daylight was never meant to see.
