Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 宿 Sù (4th tone). The Shuowen reads 宿 as 「止也。从宀𠈇声」 — 'to stop, to lodge for the night; from 宀 and 𠈇 (phonetic).' It is the night's rest under a roof — and, by extension, the long-established (宿将 = a veteran general, 宿儒 = an old scholar). The Odes linger on it: 《诗经·周颂·有客》 「有客宿宿,有客信信」 — 'the guest lodges a night (宿宿), lodges again (信信).' So 宿 is rest, the familiar haunt, the seasoned. Grading: a free, calm morpheme — to lodge, the long-accustomed. No negative sense. Disclose that 宿 also reads xiǔ (a night) and xiù (a constellation / 星宿) — three readings, all benign. A 宿将 is a veteran general, a 宿儒 an old scholar — those 'lodged long' in their craft. The astronomical 宿 (xiù, a lunar mansion) maps the sky into inns for the moon. So 宿 is the richness of what has stayed, not the emptiness of a stopover.
Cultural Story
The 'Songs' pair 夙夜 — early and late — in service, and the 'Records' map the 星宿, the celestial lodges. 投宿 meant to seek a night's rest on the road. The graph sets a roof over a person and a hundred — the many nights, the fixed stars, the old, lodged things.
Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 'to lodge' — and the monk's long stay, the thirty years in the same upstairs room that became a life's practice. Honest caveats: 宿 has three readings; the sealed-room story is a Tang anecdote, and the Kyoto manuscript's authenticity is disputed.

Read the story behind the character
Campuses assign 宿舍, and booking apps find 住宿 by the night. Anime fans quote 宿命, while astronomy classes name the 星宿. The early-and-late of the ode now means a dorm key, a reservation, and a fate line — the lodged things, still under a roof, still old.
Why this character belongs on skin
Some debts are older than memory. The word shows a man beneath a roof for the night, and from that simple lodging it gathers weight: 住宿, to sleep awhile; 宿敌, the old enemy; 宿命, the fate laid down before you were born. The Hindus call it karma, the Buddhists call it conditioning, the Christians a lineage of inheritance — the sense that we arrive already carrying something. We are guests of our own past, lodged in patterns not of our first choosing. And yet to know the 宿 is also to honor it, to sleep under the roof of what came before and wake ready to add something better. Wear this character as a mark of long memory. It says you understand you are a chapter, not the whole book; that your loves and wounds have roots in deeper soil. There is dignity in the inherited burden, and freedom in finally seeing it clearly. Lodge here tonight, traveler. Morning will ask what you intend to do with what you were given.
