Its oldest sense is not gallery art but planting: to set out seedlings with care. Confucian education counted the six arts, rites, music, archery, charioteering, calligraphy and mathematics, as the full training of a gentleman, so a scholar was expected to ride and shoot as well as compose verses on the veranda.
