Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 三 三 (sān, 1st tone) is, for Xu Shen, not arithmetic but cosmology: 天地人之道也。从三數 — 'the way of heaven, earth and man; counted by threes.' The Hetu assigns '天三生木,' making three the generative wood number. Its authority is philosophical: the Daodejing holds '三生萬物' (three gives birth to the ten thousand things); the Yijing (需) notes '有不速之客三人來' (three uninvited guests arrive); the Lunyu advises '三思而後行' (deliberate three times before acting); the Shijing (唐风·绸缪) sings '三星在天' (three stars in the sky). As a free morpheme 三 means 'three, manifold, repeated,' and is wholly positive in 三光, 三宝, 三才. Honest disclosure for Western wearers: on skin 三 is three plain strokes and reads as the number 3 or as a hyphen/divider; in Japanese it is san, and the strokes can be misread as a Roman 'm' or a brand mark. Do not over-claim 'trinity' in a Christian sense — the Chinese triad is heaven-earth-man.

Cultural Story

論語 records 季文子三思而后行, think three times before you act, though Confucius thought even that was a bit much. The 道德經 gives the famous ladder: one, two, three, then the myriad. Three was the number of heaven, earth, and man. A boy kowtows three times; a judge strikes the gavel thrice. Repetition to three meant completion, not excess.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 三 is 'three', the generative triad of the Chinese cosmos; Cui Yuan's cursive gives it flight — not the Trinity, and on skin it stays three abstract bars.

In the modern world

三个 is what you order at the noodle stand; 三角 is a love triangle in a soap opera and a triangle ruler in a pencil case. 三心二意 describes your coworker who cannot finish a task; 三番五次 is your landlord calling about rent. The number is pure counting now, but the old habit of triple emphasis lingers in speech, three times still means enough times to matter.
