Cultural Story
In the 汉书 and the histories that followed, each biography closes with a 赞, a terse poetic appraisal of the subject's worth, the author's final verdict in rhyme. To 赞 was to weigh a life aloud. The form later softened into 赞美, praise, and 赞助, sponsorship, of every kind. The closing verse was the author's last word on a life, spoken in measured rhyme.

Read the story behind the character
At a concert, a crowd 赞叹, admires, a soprano while a brand 赞助, sponsors, the venue and a committee 赞成, approves, a plan. A teacher 称赞, praises, an essay and a friend 赞美, a meal. The historian's verdict has become the everyday yes and well-done. The brand and the teacher borrow the old verdict and spend it on approval.
Why this character belongs on skin
The character 赞 is applause built into the strokes: above, two forelegs marching together—the old sign of attendants coming forward in unison—and below the shell radical, treasure presented openly. To praise, in this character, is to bring a gift forward with both hands. Classical ritual knew this as ceremony: honor performed in public, praise as a communal act, not a like-click but a bow. Its later meanings ripened into sponsorship and eulogy—to commend, to uphold, to speak well of someone in their absence, which the old texts considered one of the highest arts. We live in a thirsty age, short on the generous word and long on the snide one. Here is a small corrective, inked: be the person who brings the gift forward. Applaud loudly. Write the tribute. Wear this character and let it assign you the oldest human duty—witnessing one another, beautifully, out loud.
