厂 began as a picture of a cliff and the shelter beneath it. By the Ming it named the 东厂, the Eastern Depot -- a secret police bureau that the Yongle emperor set up in 1420 to watch officials and subjects alike. Its agents reported straight to the throne. The bare radical still hangs in the character, a roof against rock, long before it ever meant a building full of machines.

Read the story behind the character

A 厂家 in Dongguan ships earbuds to Europe; its 厂房 runs three shifts. The 厂长 walks the floor checking output. Outside the city a 电厂 lights the skyline at night. On a delivery box the 厂家 prints its name and a QR code. The word now means the place where things are made, and almost nothing of the old cliff-shelter remains in how people use it.

Why this character belongs on skin

Long before it meant a factory floor, this was a cliff. 厂 is the pictograph of a rock overhang, the shallow cave where a traveler ducks out of the weather — half shelter, half mountain. The ancients saw in it the first architecture: not a wall we raise but a wall the earth already gave. To mark yourself with 厂 is to carry that origin story, the reminder that the sturdiest things are borrowed from the land. There is a modern irony too — the character now stamps the gates of industry, where we left the cliff behind. But the root stays tender: refuge, the lean-to against storm, the place you go when the sky turns. Some of us are built like that overhang, offering cover we never asked to give.
