Cultural Story

Ling is a continuous mountain ridge, the Shuo Wen Jie Zi glossing it as a mountain path. The wu ling (Five Ridges) formed the great southern wall of the Chinese heartland, and ling nan (south of the ranges) named the warm lands beyond. Travelers crossing a ling wrote of clouds, exile and the fen shui ling (watershed) where rivers turn toward home or away.

Your train dives through a tunnel under the shan ling (mountain ridge) on the way south. A friend lives in ling nan (south of the ranges) and sends you pictures of lychees. Why this character belongs on skin

Follow the spine of the earth where the mountains lie down in a long row, and you are walking a 岭—the ridge, the running backbone of the world. From afar the range looks like one creature breathing; up close each peak is its own solitude. The travelers of old crossed such ridges carrying home on their backs, and the poems they left on the passes speak of distance made bearable by the line itself, the knowing that one summit only hands you to the next. To carry 岭 is to accept the long terrain of a life, not a single peak but a succession, each rise its own small death and birth. It is endurance drawn as a horizon.
