Cultural Story
潭 is the still, deep pool where a river slows and sinks, the Shuowen says 水出也, deep water. Classical poetry and travel writing treasured the 深潭 (deep pool): a place of mystery, cold, and sometimes a dragon. The 龙潭 (dragon pool) was sacred, a spot where the rain-giving dragon was thought to dwell, and emperors sent priests to pray there in drought. To gaze into a 潭 was to face depth itself, water so quiet and profound it seemed to hold secrets the rushing stream had left behind.

Read the story behind the character
潭 is where water goes deep. Hikers rest by a 深潭 (deep pool) fed by a mountain stream, and a kid gets stuck in a 泥潭 (mire, mud pool) on a rainy hike, funny until the shoes are ruined. Folklore tours still point out the 龙潭 (dragon pool, deep pool) locals believe is blessed. You will not hear 潭水 (pool water) at the supermarket, but the character anchors every deep, still, slightly eerie body of water in China's riverside and mountain scenery.
Why this character belongs on skin
Under the waterfall at Lushan there is a pool so green and so deep the Tang poet Li Bai wrote of its three thousand feet of falling water—疑是银河落九天, as if the Milky Way had tumbled from heaven. The pool that catches the fall is 潭: water gone perfectly still because it is perfectly deep. Not the rushing stream but what the rushing stream feeds—dark, cold, holding. Buddhist and Daoist minds loved such pools. The mind in meditation, the Chan masters said, should be a deep pool: the bird flies over, the reflection passes, the water does not cling. Depth is what makes stillness possible; shallows churn. If you have grown quieter with age—not duller, deeper—this character is your self-portrait. A pool, a depth, a held sky. Let them look in and see how far down it goes.
