Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 枫 Fēng (1st tone). The Shuowen Jiezi defines 楓 (traditional 枫) as 『楓,木也。從木風聲』 — 'a tree; from wood, wind as sound': the maple. Its leaves blaze red in late autumn. The Tang poet 張繼 (Zhang Ji) immortalised it in 《楓橋夜泊》: 『月落烏啼霜滿天,江楓漁火對愁眠』 — 'moon sets, crows cry, frost fills the sky; river maples and fishing fires face sorrowful sleep.' In Chinese lore a red maple leaf could carry a lover's poem (紅葉題詩). As a free morpheme 枫 means 'maple.' Honest disclosure: 枫 is the tree, not 风 (wind) — they are near-homophones but unrelated in sense; simplified 枫 drops the 風 component to 风, erasing the sound-cue. No negative register; a lone 枫 reads as the crimson autumn tree, auspicious and gentle.

Cultural Story

枫 is the maple, and the 楚辭 places a 楓 tree at the watery southern border where the soul of the dead gathers — a tree of parting and the unseen. The Tang poets turn its red leaf into autumn's signature. The 枫林 in late October is a wall of fire along a mountain road after the first cold.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 枫 is the maple — but not the sugar-maple of Canada's flag. In Cai Xiang's polished hand it is the Chinese maple whose leaves redden by a night river in a Tang poem, the tree of quiet melancholy and the letter written on a single red leaf (红叶题诗). Stand with it as autumn's love-note, the Latin 'acer' made lyrical. A Westerner need not confuse it with 'wind' (风) — 枫 is the tree, full stop; its crimson is a confession, not a weather report.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

枫 is the leaf on the postcard: 枫叶 the red blade a tourist pockets in Canada or Kyoto, 红枫 the variety planted in a courtyard for color. 枫树 lines a mountain road in November. The character is seasonal decoration, the tree you photograph, less a symbol now than a reason to take a train in fall.

Why this character belongs on skin

In the tenth month the maple sets the hills on fire and calls it letting go. The maple, whose leaves turn to blade-red before they fall, is the tree that makes mortality beautiful on purpose. The poets pinned its leaf to the letter sent home, a small red punctuation for I am still here, and the year is turning. There is a Buddhist calm in such bright decay: to burn before you vanish, to be seen precisely as you release. To wear this character is to claim the autumn self, the one who does not fear the ending because the ending is the coloring. It is a sensual, defiant mark — ink it where the shoulder meets the back, a single leaf of red implied in black — and let it say: I will go out in color, and the falling will be the most beautiful thing I do.
