灵 joins 巫 (shaman) with 火 or 霝 (rain, blessing), meaning the responsive, numinous power that answers prayer, the Shuowen gives 巫也, the spirit. The Classics place 灵 at altars where sacrifices proved 灵验 (effective, accurate), and the 灵魂 (soul, spirit) was what survived the body. A quick mind was 灵, and a clever hand 灵巧.
