熟 grew from 孰, 'who, ripe,' by adding fire, marking grain or fruit brought to cooked ripeness. The Lunyu advises that things done with 熟悉 familiarity flow like ritual, and Tang poets contrast 熟 sleep with restless nights. In agriculture a 成熟 harvest meant survival; cooks prized 熟食 prepared food over raw. The character thus binds nature's ripeness, the hearth, and mastered skill.
