Cultural Story

The folk airs of the Shi Jing, the guo feng, are ge yao sung by villagers about their lords and their loves, gathered by officials who rode out to hear them. The character yao is that unwritten song, the yao of the field carried without a score. Later it darkened into rumor, the yao that spreads faster than the truth it mimics, but its first home was the open road and the voice.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A phone pushes a yao about a shortage no shop confirms, and a grandmother hums a min yao from her county to the child. A class learns a tong yao at circle time, clapping the old line, and a singer posts a new ge yao online. The character yao still carries both the tune and the rumor, song and whisper.

Why this character belongs on skin

Words radical on the left, and on the right something like a pottery drum shaken—谣, the song that travels hand to mouth before anyone can trace its origin. Ballads began this way: the Book of Songs collected village 谣, hearsay that turned out to be the oldest poetry on earth. A rumor, too, is only a story moving faster than its proof, and the ancients drew no hard line between gossip and art. Words are wind with intent. There is a dare inside this character—what will you carry, and what will you start? Ink 谣 and become the drum: let what leaves your lips be the kind of tune that deserves to outlive its source, sung on in strangers' mouths.
