The Daodejing teaches that the heavy is the root of the light, 重为轻根, and praises the sage who keeps the weight and so is not blown about. The 重 was substance against flutter, the anchor beneath motion. From that line the character kept the twin senses of heft and of consequence, the thing that matters because it cannot be lifted lightly away.
