Wang Bo, in his Tengwang Pavilion preface, writes that the clouds melt and the rain 霁, the colored light breaking clean across the cleared sky — a turn from storm to clarity that became the set piece for every later 雨霁. A 雪霁 over a river village showed the same 霁色, the fair weather color after hardship. To reach the 霁 was to have the world wiped and offered fresh.
