墙 is the enclosing wall. The 论语 (Analects) has the Master comparing a worthy to 『数仞之墙』, too deep to be seen over; the poet 苏轼 joked his 围墙 kept out both guests and worries. 城墙 (city walls) ringed every 宋 (Song) market town against raiders. 墙角 (corner) is where the sweep of the brush lands last. Homes hang 墙纸 (wallpaper) in the nursery; renters patch a 墙壁 crack before moving out. The 城墙 of Xi'an hosts night runners on its top; a 墙头 (wall top) holds a neighbour's cat at sunset. 围墙 rings a primary school for safety. The word still does its oldest job — marking whose space is whose, from a phone case to a capital.

Why this character belongs on skin

The greatest wall on earth was built by hands that also wrote poems. 墙 is wall—brick, rampart, the courtyard enclosure around every Chinese home, keeping the family warm and the world at a distance. Walls are the oldest human sentence: here I end, there you begin. They protect and they imprison, sometimes in the same afternoon. Frost promised something before he wrote of walls: good fences, neighbors—the ambivalence built into mortar. To ink 墙 is to take a position on your own boundaries: this far and no farther, or perhaps a promise to finally let a gate in. The wall radical is earth, and earth is honest. The Great Wall itself outgrew its purpose within a generation—gates opened for trade, messengers crossing both ways, the barrier becoming a spine the country arranged itself around.
