Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 庭 Tíng (2nd tone). Shuowen Jiezi (卷九, 广部) glosses 庭 as 宮中也 — 'the interior of the hall' — 从广廷聲, a roof leaning against a slope over the space where a household actually lives. Duan Yucai clarifies 宮者,室也;室之中曰庭 and records a second, older extension: 庭者,正直之處也, 'the place of uprightness', which is why 《詩·小雅·大田》 can say 既庭且碩 of crops standing straight and full. The Yijing places restraint here: 《易·節》 初九 reads 不出戶庭,无咎 — 'he does not leave the courtyard gate; no blame'. 《論語·季氏》 gives the yard its most famous scene: 鯉趨而過庭, Confucius' son hurrying across and being stopped for a lesson — the origin of 庭訓, 'family teaching'. Kangxi counts ten strokes. 庭 is a free morpheme. Honest disclosure: modern Chinese reads 法庭 first, 'courtroom', so a literate viewer may see the judiciary before the garden.
Cultural Story
庭 is the courtyard inside the gate, the open square where a family's light falls. 庭院深深 is 歐陽修's line for a women's quarters no visitor reaches, and 天庭 the heavenly court that judges from above — or, on a face, the broad forehead the physiognomist reads as fortune.

Why this character belongs on skin
Within the wall there is a square of sky and a tree that has watched three generations learn to bow. This is the courtyard, the open heart of the home where the family gathers and the ancestors are fed—the Confucian world in miniature, order and affection held in one quiet square. To stand in a courtyard is to feel the weight of those who stood before you, and the duty, gently borne, to those who come after. There is a settled peace here, a belonging no road can grant. To ink this character is to carry a homeland under the skin, a claim of rootedness in a drifting age. It is the tattoo of one who knows where they are from. Let it rest over the chest, the inner court where you meet yourself each morning. Wear it as a gate always open to the worthy, a reminder that however far you wander, some courtyard remembers your name and keeps a stool warm by the wall.
