Cultural Story
The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon, the 黃帝內經, describes limbs that 攣, drawing tight in spasm, the body's wires shortening against the will. 挛 is the cramp as the physician reads it, a small mutiny of the sinews written down two millennia ago, and the physician prescribed warmth and silence, having no better argument against a muscle that had decided otherwise.
Common words & phrases
- 痉挛 convulsion · spasm
- 挛缩 contracture
Read the story behind the character
A muscle 痙攣 contracts without asking; a joint 攣縮 stiffens after the cast comes off. The physician's old word is now the athlete's curse and the patient's X-ray. The mutiny of the sinews is the same, only the explanation moved from humors to nerves, and the cast comes off to reveal a joint that learned the wrong lesson.
Why this character belongs on skin
When the body cannot let go, it has a word for that. 挛—痉挛, cramp, convulsion—is the hand radical clasping an ancient sound of twisted silk: fingers curled in on themselves, a muscle locked, the hand that will not open. Medicine knows it as spasm. But look at what the word borrows its sound from: 孪, twins; 娈, lovely; 峦, the peaks of a mountain range—luán is the sound of things coiled together, twinned, climbing. The body's version of devotion. A cramp is a love that has gone wrong at the level of muscle—so much holding that holding becomes pain. There is a lesson in it that both Buddhism and every long marriage eventually teach: grip is not the same as grasp, and clenched is not the same as close. The open hand can hold more than the fist. Ink this character over the inside of the wrist, beside the tendon, the very place a fist begins, and let it keep teaching your fingers the harder skill: staying, while letting go.
