Cultural Story
瘠 puts the sound of 脊, spine, beside the sickness radical: the lean frame, and by extension the exhausted soil. The Guoyu observed that folk of 瘠土 — barren land — all turn to righteousness, hardship ennobling them. Tax registers of lean mountain counties read like apologies written by geography itself.
Common words & phrases

Read the story behind the character
Agriculture headlines still fight 贫瘠 (barren, infertile) hillside soil with drip lines and cover crops; agronomists spend years testing 瘠薄 (poor soil) plots before planting orchards on them. Figuratively, critics pan a plotless drama as 瘠 — all skin stretched over bone, nothing beneath.
Why this character belongs on skin
There is ground that gives nothing easily—cracked clay, grass thin as whispers, a hillside farmers walked past for ten generations. 瘠 is that leanness: the sickness radical pressed against the body until only what is essential survives. And yet the finest pine grows on exactly such ridges. Roots clench stone; the wood comes dense, fragrant, slow-made, so heavy with resin it burns like a vow. The Daoists understood the arithmetic—whatever hunger takes from a thing, it pays back in hardness. Christianity keeps the same ledger in the wilderness: faith tested on barren rock comes out of it with authority. Ask yourself what would remain if everything easy were stripped away, and you will know why someone carries this character over the ribs. Not as a wound, and not as apology. It is a promise to be the pine—rooted where nothing else consents to live, and green anyway. The ink simply makes it public.
