Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 出 Chū (1st tone). The Shuowen Jiezi: 「進也。象艸木益滋,上出達也」 — 'to advance'; the graph pictures a plant thickening and pushing up and through. (Modern palaeography reads the oracle-bone form differently — a foot leaving a pit-dwelling — but Xu Shen's growth-image is the one the tradition carried.) The Yijing's 说卦传 makes it cosmological: 「帝出乎震」 — the Lord issues forth in Zhen, the thunder-trigram of the east and of spring; everything begins by coming out. 《诗经·邶风·日月》 opens 「日居月諸,照臨下土」, and 《陈风·东门之杨》 has 「明星煌煌」, but the plainest is 《诗经·郑风》's everyday 「出其东门,有女如云」 — 'I go out the east gate, and the women are like clouds'. 出 is a free morpheme and a workhorse verb (出发, 出色, 日出). Honest disclosure: it is grammatically free but semantically thin on its own — 'out' is a direction, not a virtue — and 出殡 (to carry out a coffin) and 出事 (an accident) are common compounds a reader may reach for.

Cultural Story

出 is drawn as a foot leaving the mouth of a cave, an exit made visible. In 227 CE Zhuge Liang drafted the 出师表, his memorial to the throne before marching north against Cao Wei: "今当远离,临表涕零." The essay became the model of loyal departure. From that memorial the character carries the weight of leaving home for duty, of going out when staying would be easier.

Where a Western reader can stand: The shoot that pushes up and through: emergence — the Yijing's Lord issuing forth in Thunder, sunrise, setting out. Western readers should wear it inside a phrase (日出, 出色); alone it is a direction with no object.

In the modern world

At the station a family waves as a student 出发 for her first term away. The hospital issues a 出生证明 the hour a child arrives. A courier scans a parcel at the 出口 gate and the log flips to "delivered." On any given morning the character tracks departures, births, and goods crossing a border.

Why this character belongs on skin

Think of a plant breaking soil, or a prisoner stepping into light he had forgotten was real. 出 is that motion — to go out, to emerge, to cross from inside to beyond. The character stacks two footprints leaving a threshold, as if departure were its very definition. We are creatures of thresholds we fear to cross: the door to the new job, the leave-taking, the first honest word. But 出 is the crossing itself, the muscle of becoming. To carry it is to name yourself one who leaves, who will not calcify in the familiar. It is a traveler's mark, a survivor's — the ink a small exit stamped on the body, always pointing out. You do not have to run. You only have to know the door exists and that you can walk through it. 出 remembers the moment you did, and dares you to do it again.
