Qu Yuan's 'Nine Songs' sends the mountain spirit forth where 'the 雷 rolls thick and the rain falls dark,' the thunder a drum for the god's procession. The 雷电 that lit the Chu shrines was worship more than weather, the sky speaking in the old tongue. A 雷雨 over the Xiang river in his lines is never only a storm but the presence moving through it.
