Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 崇 Chóng (2nd tone). The Shuowen Jiezi glosses 崇 as 「嵬高也。从山,宗声」 — lofty and high, a mountain (山) sounded by 宗. The Songs build with it: 《诗经·周颂·良耜》 「其崇如墉」 — 'they rise as high as a wall'; 《诗经·大雅·崧高》 celebrates 崧 (崇) 高维岳. The Changes teach 「知崇礼卑,崇效天,卑法地」 (《易·系辞上》) — 'know the lofty, honor the humble; the lofty models heaven.' So 崇 means high, honored, to revere (崇拜). It is a caution character: alone it reads 'lofty / revered', which is positive, but modern Chinese meets it most as 崇拜 (worship / adore) and 崇尚 (esteem), so a solo 崇 can feel like the start of a compound. Pair it — 崇高 (lofty and noble) is the natural completion. Element tables assign Earth (土).
Cultural Story
Chong joins mountain with a sound meaning high, and the Shuo Wen gives it as lofty. Ancient altars stood on chong shan (lofty mountains) to reach heaven, and Confucian writing urges us to chong jing (revere) the worthy and chong bai (worship) what is good. The word moves from physical height to moral height, to honor, to prize, to lift someone above the crowd.
Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 'to hold high, to revere' — height that becomes respect; Kang Youwei, who exalted the steles, made it a creed. Honest caveat: 崇 alone reads like half a word — complete it (崇高).

Why this character belongs on skin
To honor something is to let it stand above you. 崇 joins the mountain to the ancestor, and the ancients meant both at once: the high peak and the forefather worthy of reverence, the natural and the holy leaning into a single tall thing. To 崇 is not to cower but to lift your eyes—at the altar, at the teacher, at the love that reorganized your life. Confucius taught that reverence is the root of all right conduct; without something higher, the self swells and cracks. We worship poorly, adoring the small and the loud, and wonder why we feel unmoored. The warrior bows to his craft before he draws the blade. Wear this ink where you have chosen your mountain, and let the character hold you to it: pick what is worthy, then look up, then build your life beneath its shadow.
