In the modern world

Kids sit in a 班级 (class) at school, and workers 上班 (go to work) on the 班车 (shuttle bus) each dawn. The 班长 (monitor) takes roll, and at dusk they 下班 (get off work). A 班机 (scheduled flight) carries you home, group, shift, and routine all in one word.

Why this character belongs on skin

The jade is split and shared, each half a token of the same authority — bān is the rank, the company, the moment of dismissal when the courtier is released from service and steps back into the ordinary light. It means belonging and it means leaving: the troop you march with, and the hour you are sent home. We spend our lives in bān, finding our people and then watching the formation break, the ceremony end, the others walk off into their separate weather. The Confucian honored his bān as his place in the order of things. To carry this character is to honor both the joining and the graceful exit, the art of being part of something and then letting it go without bitterness. Ink it where you would bear a badge — the shoulder, the upper arm — a quiet crest of the company you kept and the dignity with which you turned, when the call came, and went.
