Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 凝 Níng (2nd tone). Kangxi records the etymology cleanly: 「【說文】水堅也。本作冰。从水从仌。【徐曰】俗作凝」 — Shuowen's 'hardened water' was originally written 冰; 凝 is the later popular form that took over the verb 'to congeal'. The Yijing supplies both of its great senses. Freezing: 《易·坤》 初六 文言 「履霜堅冰,隂始凝也」 — tread on frost and solid ice is coming, for the yin has begun to congeal. And focus: 《易·鼎·象》 「君子以正位凝命」 — the noble one rectifies his position and consolidates his mandate; the commentators gloss 凝 there as 嚴整, gathered and severe. 《书·皋陶谟》 has 「庶績其凝」, all works brought to firmness. 《楚辞·大招》 gives 「天白顥顥,寒凝凝只」, the sky white, the cold congealed. Modern 凝 keeps all of it: 凝聚 (cohere), 凝视 (fix the gaze), 凝神 (concentrate), 凝脂 (skin like congealed fat, from 《诗经·卫风·硕人》 「膚如凝脂」). Free morpheme, positive, no funerary reading.

Cultural Story

The form set ice and a fix, 凝, to hold still and to gather. The Odes note dew 凝 on the leaf at dawn. A thinker 凝神 before he spoke. The histories watch a 凝重 court, grave and slow. The word was the moment a thing settled — water to ice, thought to a point.

Where a Western reader can stand: Loose things becoming one solid thing: water turning to ice, a mind gathering itself, a mandate setting firm. Western readers should hear cohering and focus — not 'frozen', which mistranslates the tone.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

The crowd 凝聚 at the gate; the wax 凝固 in the mould. The reader 凝视 the page. The steam 凝结 on the glass. The student 凝神 for the exam. The mood is 凝重 at the news. The word means gather and stare — a closeness the eye and the cold both make.

Why this character belongs on skin

Watch breath on a winter window: vapor becomes frost, chaos becomes lace. 凝 is that miracle—the two dots of ice crystallizing over a word that means to freeze, to condense, to gather into fixity. It is the gaze that hardens into attention, 凝视; the congregation of a crowd into a single will; cream rising and thickening; time itself, in the phrase 凝固的时光,凝固—frozen time—stilling inside an old photograph. The character captures what meditation and art both pursue: the instant when the scattered becomes one thing, held. Lovers know it as the moment everything else leaves the room. To ink 凝 is to claim that power for your own life—the ability to gather your whole self into a point, the way cold air gathers into the first perfect star of evening. Small on the wrist, it is a reminder: whatever you attend to completely, you make permanent.
