墅 is a country retreat, a villa set apart from the busy city. The 晋 (Jin) literati built 别墅 (villas) in the 会稽 (Kuaiji) hills to escape office life; the poet 谢灵运 (Xie Lingyun) roamed his at leisure. The Tang 辋川别业 of 王维 was such a 墅 — a garden of streams, bamboo and verse. A 墅 is leisure given a roof and a view.
