Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 切 Qiē / qiè. The Shuowen Jiezi: 「刌也。从刀七聲」 — 'to chop into portions', a knife (刀) with 七 as phonetic. The first tone qiē keeps that literal edge (切割, to cut). The falling tone qiè carries everything a tattoo would want: 恳切 (earnest), 亲切 (warm, close), 关切 (concerned), 深切 (deep-felt) — meanings that grew out of 'cutting close to the bone'. The Book of Songs holds the classic image: 《诗经·卫风·淇奥》 「如切如磋,如琢如磨」 — 'as if cut, as if filed, as if carved, as if polished' — which the 《大学》 then glosses 「如切如磋者,道學也」, the cutting and filing is what learning is. 《论语·子路》 asks for 「切切偲偲,怡怡如也」, earnest and mutually exacting yet cheerful. 切 is a free morpheme both ways. Honest disclosure: the two readings pull hard against each other, and 一切 ('everything') is by far the most common modern use — a lone 切 can simply read as 'cut', or as the internet's dismissive 'tsk'.

Cultural Story

切 is the first move of the craftsman. The Book of Songs sings "如切如磋,如琢如磨," cutting and grinding a bone, then polishing it, an image for self-cultivation. The kitchen 切 cooks meat against the grain. The character keeps the saw's bite: a clean, deliberate cut that prepares a thing before finer work begins.

Where a Western reader can stand: As if cut, as if filed: 切 is a knife making things exact — and the exactness a friend owes another (切切偲偲). Western readers should pair it; a bare 切 is the cutting board.

In the modern world

The 切割 machine screams through steel pipe on the site. The surgeon 切开 the abdomen and the theatre goes still. A headline promises 切实 reform before the election. On the phone 一切 loads at once. The word names the slice, the urgency, and the whole, all at once in daily speech.

Why this character belongs on skin

切 is to cut, to slice clean through — and, in its second breath, to be eager, close, urgent. The character shows a blade against something held firm, the moment before division. There is honesty in cutting: it ends pretense, it decides, it leaves two edges where there was one soft middle. To carry 切 is to honor the decisive act, the willingness to sever what should not continue. We linger; 切 moves. But the character also means the eager nearness of a heart pressed too close to its longing. Wear it as a double mark — sharp when needed, devoted when loved. Let it rest where your pulse is fastest and remember: a life well lived is one cut clean of the false, and leaned into the true with everything it has. Cut, and care. Both are 切.
