Cultural Story
殿 originally meant the rear of a building; the 說文解字 gives '堂之高者曰殿', the high hall. In imperial China it named the great ceremonial halls — 殿堂 and 宮殿 — where emperors held audience. 殿下, 'below the hall', became the respectful address for princes and princesses, while temples housed 寶殿, sacred halls for the Buddha.

Read the story behind the character
Modern Chinese still bows to 殿下 (Your Highness) in royal news, while tourists queue through 宮殿 (palaces) and 寶殿 (sacred halls) on holiday. In a contest, the 殿军 (rear guard) is the one who finishes last — still in the hall, but at the back. The word keeps its architectural, ceremonial weight.
Why this character belongs on skin
Stand at the threshold of a great hall and feel it: the hush, the pillars, the light falling in long columns. 殿 is that hall—temple, palace, the soaring center of a complex where emperors ruled and Buddhas sat in gold. The character holds 展 at its base, the sense of something spread open, magnified. Architecture as aspiration: the ancients built upward because the spirit also wants altitude. To wear 殿 is to declare an inner throne room, a place in yourself kept high and clean, where your better self holds court. Some halls are made of timber and tile. Yours is made of resolve. The Forbidden City's greatest hall burned and was rebuilt, burned and rebuilt again, each version grander—because the hall was never the wood. It was always the intention standing in the same place. Let the ink mark the door.
