Mencius drew his sternest line with a carpenter's tools: 'Without the compass and the square, you cannot make a circle or a square.' The character gui is the compass itself, the arc-scribing tool paired with ju the square. For two thousand years gui ju meant not just geometry but proper conduct, the forms that keep a society from wobbling.
