Cultural Story

Confucius listed nine things the gentleman watches in himself, and among them mao si gong, in his look he is reverent, the face kept humble before others. The character mao is that outward appearance, the wai mao a stranger reads first. From the same count it rose to li mao, the courtesy shown in bearing, and to the quan mao of a matter, the whole face a thing presents to the world.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A candidate minds her li mao at the interview, and a guest reads the wai mao of the house before he enters. The report shows only the biao mao of the crisis, not its depth, and a friend trusts the xiang mao over the résumé. The character mao still names the face we judge and the face we show.

Why this character belongs on skin

貌 is the face a person presents — appearance, bearing, manner — and the ancients wrote it with the radical for form beside the white of exposure: how you look is how you are seen. But Confucius made bearing a moral art: 君子正其衣冠 — the gentleman corrects his cap and robe, not out of vanity, but because outward order trains inward order. 相由心生 — the face is born of the heart: what you carry inside eventually writes itself on the surface, line by line, and no mirror can lie about it. This character holds both truths at once — that appearances deceive, and that they cannot, not in the long run. There is dignity in this: your face is a biography you did not choose to write but cannot refuse. To tattoo 貌 is to accept authorship — to promise that what you show the world will be worth reading. Ink it near the jawline or the wrist, subtle as a signature, and let your bearing be your testament.
