The Book of Songs warns that the mirror of the fallen Yin is not far off, it lies in the house of Xia, the 殷鉴 by which a later ruler should read his own fall. The 鉴 was the bronze basin of water that showed a face and, by turn, a fate. From that counsel the character kept the doubled sight of a surface that reflects both a man and his end.
