Lǐ (3rd tone). The Shuowen Jiezi gives 李 as 「果也」 — ‘a fruit-tree, the plum,’ from 木 (wood) and 子 (sound/seed). The Shi Jing returns to it twice: 《诗经·小雅》 「投我以桃，报之以李」 — ‘you threw me a peach, I return a plum,’ the root of 投桃报李 (‘reciprocate a $9.00 – Purchase Checkout Added to cart
