粹 is pure, unalloyed — grain picked clean, color unmixed. Philosophers used it for character without a drop of dross. Why this character belongs on skin

A white radical against raw grain: 粹 is purity won by processing—the rice stripped to its whitest heart, nothing husked, nothing wasted. 纯粹 means pure through and through; 精粹, the quintessence, the drop that survived the distillation. The alchemists' dream in a single glyph: first matter refined until only the true remains. But purity here is not innocence, which is merely ignorance of fire. It is what fire leaves when it finishes—tempered steel, blown glass, the widow's calm after the worst has happened.
