Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

Dao runs through modern talk: daolu (road) under the new asphalt, dadao (boulevard) downtown, zhidao (know) the answer before breakfast, daoli (reason) in grandma's sayings, daode (morality) in the school curriculum, daojiao (Daoism) incense at the hill temple. Every sense keeps a trace of the path.

Why this character belongs on skin

The Dao that can be spoken is not the eternal Dao. So begins the book, and so begins the trouble — how do you tattoo the unnameable? Yet 道 is the most worn ink in the West's imagined East, and not without reason. It is the current beneath the river, the grain inside the wood, the logic of a thing before words arrived. Laozi watched water and learned: yield, and you win; bend, and you break last. To carry 道 is to stop fighting the shape of your life and start reading it — like weather, like a lover's mood. It does not tell you where to go. It tells you the going itself is the place. A quiet compass with no needle, pointing always inward.
