Why this character belongs on skin
The oldest form of 献 shows a vessel—something held out in ceremony, offered up. To 献 is to give to someone greater, or to the moment: 献花, to lay flowers; 献身, to offer one's own body, the word for devotion unto self-sacrifice. Every religion arrives here eventually. The Buddhist gives merit to all beings; the Christian offers the self as a living sacrifice; the soldier 献出一切—gives everything—and the word does not distinguish between altar and battlefield, because the gesture is identical: hands opening, something valued passing out of your keeping forever. This is not charity, which keeps receipts. This is offering, which burns the receipt. There is a fearlessness in it that has nothing to do with armor. The most dangerous people in any room are the ones who have already given themselves away; you cannot threaten what has been offered. Ink this character and you declare a direction for your life: toward the giving, not the keeping. The vessel is old, the gesture is yours.
