Cultural Story

刭 is the cut at the throat. When Lord Xinling stole the tally to save Zhao, the old counsellor Hou Ying, who had advised the plot, turned north and 自刭 to seal his loyalty, as the 史记 tells it. The stroke is final and chosen. The character names a death dealt by one's own hand at the neck.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

The word survives mainly on the history page and in the 古装剧, where a defeated general 自刭 rather than be taken. A footnote glosses 刭颈 for the student. Dictionaries list it beside 刎. The word now lives in reading and on screen, a classical close to a life.

Why this character belongs on skin

Every warrior knows the neck: the narrow gate where breath meets vow. 刭 means to cut the throat—an old, terrible word from the Warring States, when honor was measured in the speed of a blade and loyalty cost precisely this much. It appears in the histories as the price men paid for refusing betrayal, the final punctuation of defiant lives. There is something almost holy in that economy: the Greeks called it the beautiful death; the samurai had their own rite; the martyrs of every faith, witness. We do not romanticize violence—we romanticize conviction, the thing so solid it cannot be negotiated with. 刭 is mortality made literal, a memento mori with an edge: remember that you are killable, and therefore that your choices matter. A tattoo of it is not a threat. It is a reminder worn where the pulse shows, that a life spent well should be worth its own weight. Carried at the throat, it whispers: live so that nothing is owed.
