Cultural Story
Xunzi, in 勸學, says to lead a coat by its collar is 若挈裘領, as if lifting a fur by the neck — the whole garment follows. 挈 is the grip at the one point that moves everything else. The essayist used it for right reading, and the student who seized the collar of a hard book found the sleeves stopped fighting him at once.

Read the story behind the character
A plan is 提綱挈領, seize the outline and the rest hangs straight; a man 挈眷 flees the city with his family; a helper 挈帶s a friend along. The fur's neck is now a report's first line. The grip at the key point is still the shortest road to order, whether the garment is a coat, a document, or a household in flight.
Why this character belongs on skin
The hand radical reaches into 挈 like a hand into a basket, because that is exactly what the character shows: to grasp, to lift, to carry away — most often in the old texts, a person carrying those they love. 挈妇将雏, Lu Xun wrote: gathering wife and children under one's arm and moving through danger. It is a word of exodus and devotion, of the moment you stop calculating and simply pick up what matters. Every refugee knows this verb; so does every parent at a burning stairwell; so does anyone who once said, without drama, we leave now. The strength in 挈 is not the arm's but the priority's — strength is deciding what gets carried when you can carry little. As a tattoo, it marks that decision. Ink it on the forearm, where the tendons know the truth. It asks one question of the future: when you can hold only one thing, you already know what it is.
