Cultural Story
With grass on top and 委 (bent, submitting) beneath, 萎 depicts a plant bowing and surrendering its moisture. Classical texts applied it to vegetation scorched by drought or killed by frost — the 《詩經》 and later farmers' almanacs speak of leaves that 萎 when autumn drains them. By extension it came to describe anything losing vigor: a garden, an empire's edge provinces, and eventually a person's spirit. Physicians later borrowed it for 萎痹, the wasting of limbs, giving the character a place in medical writing as well as poetry.

Read the story behind the character
Today 萎 is the vocabulary of decline, gentle or clinical. The basil on a forgetful roommate's windowsill 枯萎 — withers — over a long weekend; a doctor warns that unused muscle will 萎缩, atrophy, after the injury; and a friend slumped on the sofa after exams admits he feels 萎靡, depressed and listless, until someone drags him out for hotpot. Economists even use 萎缩 for shrinking markets, so the wilting weed now describes stock charts too.
Why this character belongs on skin
There is a particular grief in the flower that loses its standing — not the drama of the fall but the slow giving way, the stem no longer able to hold the weight of its own bloom, the 萎 that the gardeners fear and the poets understand. To wither is not to fail; it is to complete the arc the bud began, to return the color to the earth that lent it. The Buddhists count it among the first truths: all that is gathered will soften and bow. We spend our strength denying the lean, pumping the wilted thing with false spring. But the honored elder is the one who 萎-s with grace, who lets the leaf go without hatred of the wind. Ink this where age will find you, at the hand or the temple, and let it be a pact to fade honestly, to be autumn without shame.
