The name Chenzhou, written 郴, is said to mean a city within the woods, the character built from 林 and 邑 as a walled settlement cradled by hills. So the old gloss runs, and the green valleys of southern Hunan have kept that reading in their gazetteers. A single character thus carried the shape of the place, forest pressing in on the town it named.

The characters 郴州 sit on the departure board where the Beijing-Guangzhou line pauses, and a traveler buys a platform ticket north toward Changsha.
